Manly Foods for Thought
In conclusion of the month of June, I’m going to put one more “nugget” to help take care of our guys. Here are a few foods you can consider that help men keep their bodies in check in what can be problem areas.
Tomatoes are starting to come on the vine and some people have any harvested their first. Well tomatoes are important to men because they are loaded with lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant that’s been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Eating them on a BLT or simple raw out of the garden is great, but research shows that cooking them in olive oil helps improve the absorption of lycopene.
Spinach is a rich source for magnesium which is shown to lower the body’s levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), a compound that binds to free testosterone and makes it inactive. In one study, boosting magnesium intake resulted in a 24% increase in free testosterone levels. Optimal magnesium status has also been linked with higher testosterone levels in observational studies.
Collard greens (grandmas favorite?) are a great source of vitamin K, which also helps protect against prostate cancer. A study showed that 11,000 men, with a high intake of vitamin K2 was linked to 63% lower risk of prostate cancer. A bonus, collards are also high in vitamin C.
We hope this “tidbit” gave you some useful information you may have not known about some foods you eat or don’t eat.
